A name that has become synonymous with gripping crime fiction is Michael Connelly, a prolific American author. Connelly is a popular and influential writer in the genre, thanks to his many years of experience. Born in 1956, Connelly’s journey to literary stardom is nothing short of remarkable.
Probably his best work, “Harry” Bosch, is that relentless detective investigating around Los Angeles. Harry lives on Woodrow Wilson drive in a house on stilts. He financed his Hollywood Hills house by being a movie consultant. It’s certainly not on his detective salary that he can afford the house with the exceptional view.
Harry is a complex character. He’s working in a city with a high crime rate. He’s separated from his wife, but has a teenage daughter. Eventually, she’ll go to the police academy and make it in the ranks of the LAPD.
Other than Bosch, Michael Connelly brought to life other major characters, like defense attorney Mickey Haller. He’s also separated and Harry Bosch is his half-brother. So when reading a Haller story, chances are you’ll also hear about Harry.
What makes Connelly’s work shine is his ability to marry detective work with modern crime issues. His novels are relevant and contemporary.
Michael Connelly’s novels have been adapted into TV shows over time and they are as good as the original books. Earlier in life, I have read the books written by Connelly, watched the TV series, and listen to his audiobooks more recently. It is fun to listen to the audiobooks because the same actor reads the part in the audio version as the Harry Bosch character on TV.
In a literary landscape filled with crime fiction, Michael Connelly’s novels stand as shining beacons of excellence. Connelly’s skillful storytelling, authentic writing, and memorable characters continue to captivate readers and establish him as a genre master.
It is for these reasons he’s my favorite author.
Thank you Michael.
